Milan in January

A big sale starts in Milan in January

Milan in January 2024 – is it worth visiting? Weather, air temperature, what to wear, prices in hotels and on excursions. When the sales start, what to do in Milan in early January, where to go in the vicinity – good Time for Trip figured out the details.

If many European cities are beloved and visited by many travelers in January for the only reason – the chance of meeting with tourist crowds is minimal – then Milan motivates others. Namely – sales! After all, immediately after the New Year, famous Saldi is officially launched in the capital of Lombardy. And prices for branded, fashionable things melt like snow in the sun.

In 2024, sales in Milan will begin on January 5, the first Saturday of the month, and will last for 60 days. Naturally, all the most inexpensive items will be sold out in the first weeks, if not days after the start of the promotion.

And therefore, if you are primarily interested in buying some branded clothing and shoes for a reasonable money, do not postpone your trip to Italy even until mid-January.

However, the further the sales go, the higher the discounts will be. The assortment, however, will be greatly reduced.

So, citizens who are not fixated on shopping may well come to Milan at the end of January – the weather will allow them to participate in all of the planned excursions. Prices will decrease to a minimum and remain at these levels until the end of winter.

Weather in Milan in January

Characterized by a mild, completely non-severe character. As the air temperature seems to deny the existence of down jackets to the toes and thick sheepskin coats. So those who visit Italy’s second largest city in the middle of winter can limit themselves to fairly light clothes.

For example, in early January 2024, in Milan, the air during the day warmed up even to +11-12 °C (51.8-53.6 °F). And at night the temperature did not drop too much, after sunset the street thermometers showed about up to +7-8 degrees Celsius (44.6-46.4 °F).

Which, as experienced travelers will responsibly confirm to you, is very good. Because, for example, in the same Venice the weather in winter is much colder.

By the middle of the month, in January Milan, sample 2023, the air temperature did not rise above +5-6 ° C (41-42.8 °F) even by noon. At night, short frosts were sometimes recorded.

At the end of January, the weather in Milan decided that contrasts were in fashion. So in the afternoon it reached +11 °C (51.8 °F), in the evening the air temperature dropped to zero.

Precipitation

At the same time, it is often very sunny, according to long-term statistics, January in Milan is the driest month of the year. The winds are also not sharp, so there is no reason to fear that +5 °C (41 °F) will feel like -10 °C (14 °F).

The average rainfall is low – no more than 40-50 mm per month. The number of rainy days usually does not exceed 4-5, but humidity often exceeds 90%, freezing tourists lightly dressed for a walking tour of the city.

The sun rises in Milan on January 1 just after 8 a.m., and sets shortly before 5 p.m. On the threshold of February, it does the same thing a bit earlier and about 40 minutes later, respectively.

What to Wear

Based on the usual weather conditions for the Lombard capital in January, we would recommend leaving a thick warm jacket and a knitted double hat at home. As well as a down jacket to your feet – it’s unlikely to bring you anything but inconvenience.

For walking around the city, we would recommend wearing light quilted jackets complete with a variety of sweaters and hoodies. For you will not only have to walk a lot on the streets, but also often go to the shops. And, therefore, there is almost no chance of freezing naturally!

In some moments, gloves, scarves, hats and caps will definitely not be superfluous. It is better to take shoes with thick soles and obviously not suede. Because the chance of inadvertently getting your feet wet after a big snowfall in Milan in January is by no means illusory.

What to Do in Milan in January

It is unlikely that you should develop special routes for moving around the city compared to other months of the year. Although, perhaps someone will take the trouble to do it.

After all, January in Milan is a very sunny and moderately cold time. As if provoking travelers not to leave the street from dawn to dusk.

We will not describe the plan in details here – the places that can be viewed in Milan in 2 to 3 days are listed in our separate material. Which traditionally contains something like a recommendation for building a route.

Naturally, we will not refrain from listing the main points of application of tourist attention! Milan Cathedral, the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the Sforza Castle and the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie consider it their duty to see with their own eyes every first traveler visiting Milan.

Milan Cathedral is one of the main attractions in Milan, worth visiting in January

Often, only on the spot they find out that they will be able to see Leonardo da Vinci’s fresco “The Last Supper” only by overpaying the dealers. Since official tickets for visiting the refectory at Santa Maria delle Grazie, where the shchedevr is stored, must be purchased on the website vivaticket.com/it/ticket/cenacolo-vinciano/26482 ahead of time.

If for some reason you do not have enough attractions in the Lombard capital itself and the surrounding area (which can be seen in Bergamo), you can leave the region.

For example, on the high-speed express Frecciarossa, a traveler can easily get from Milan to Venice in just 2.5 hours. To see the sights of Turin, you will have to travel by train for about an hour. The trip to Verona will take 15 minutes longer, and you can get to Genoa in 1.5 hours.

Well, for those who are not going to go anywhere else, we address our next section:

January Sales in Milan

After all, the city, as you know, is the center of attraction for all the fashionistas of the world. Well, in January and summer, when seasonal sales begin in Italy, for some categories of citizens Milan becomes something like the capital of the world.

It makes sense to concentrate your efforts in the capital of Lombardy on boutiques on the streets of via della Spiga, via Sant’Andrea, via Montenapoleone and via Manzoni. There is a place for shopaholics to roam on the long Corso Buenos Aires, where shops of lesser-known, but still high-quality brands are represented.

However, you can buy what you need at a discount not only in city stores and boutiques, but also in huge shopping centers. The list of popular outlets nearby Milan looks like this:

Serravalle Designer Outlet

This outlet is located 90 km to the south of the city, and is considered the largest in Europe. With more than 250 stores, it is literally impossible not to buy here at least something.

Franciacorta Outlet Village

It is located near Brescia, about 90 km from Milan. Here are represented around 150 brands, such as Adidas, Calvin Klein, Fratelli Rossetti, Roncato, Timberland.

Vicolungo The Style Outlets

It is located not in Lombardy, but in Piedmont, near the town of Novara. But, due to the quite short distance of about 60 km, it is popular among Milanese themselves. The following brands are represented: Armani, Trussardi, Tommy Hilfiger, Guess, Missoni, Nike and many others.

In January, not just shopping starts in Milan, but a real immersion in the life of Milan with its legendary streets and famous boutiques

Scalo Milano – Outlet & More

It is located just a 15-minute drive from the city center, accommodates about 130 designer and even grocery stores. The following brands are represented: Karl Lagerfeld, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi’s, Cassina, Poltrona Frau, Kartell.

Prices in 2024

At the very beginning of the year, it is hardly to get a discount on hotel stays in Milan. So for the sum of about 120-130 € per day, you can rent only apartments for two located at a certain distance from the city center.

However, if you stay in a place like BnButler – Coni Zugna – Parco Solari, a spacious and technically well-equipped apartment, you are unlikely to complain about fate. Moreover, it is located near the California metro station.

Those who want to settle closer to the center on foot to explore the main sights of Milan should initially stock up on a significantly larger amount of money. Since in the period from Christmas Eve to about some days after New Year’s Day, hotel prices increase significantly.

A slightly more economical solution is to travel to the capital of Lombardy in the second half of January. Because for about the same money you will be able to settle much more successfully. For example, in Residence De La Gare, an apartment complex located next to the Milan central station.

Where it is convenient to arrive – in the case that you travel by train, and to leave further. For example, on a trip from Milan to Rome.

Excursions around the main Lombard city with a English-speaking guide that time may be not so expensive. In particular, a “cool” 1-3-hour tour costs about 40 €. And the group will almost certainly be small.
