Let’s agree that if you look from Rome, it’s not so easy to get to Venice. But the aspiration (again?) of visiting the “City of Canals” during any trip to Italy is quite understandable. Why not, in modern conditions?

Both Roman Termini and Tiburtina stations are connected to the Rome metro network and are easily get by a direct Leonardo da Vinci express line to Fiumicino Airport. Therefore, even during rush hour, you will not have any difficulties with timely arrival on the platform. It is only necessary to lay down an additional 15-20 minutes to search for a ticket office and a possible queue for tickets.
Unless, of course, you purchased them online in advance. This should not always be done – plans sometimes have to be changed very abruptly. And it will not always be possible to return the money for tickets.
From Rome to Venice by train
The distance between the cities along the railway curve is about 525 km. The high-speed train Frecciarossa, following non-stop, overcomes it in 4 hours (Termini – Santa Lucia). With transfers (international – Intercity and regional – Regionale), you will have to travel at least 7 hours.
The duration of the Rome-Venice railway journey makes it reasonable to raise the question of an overnight stay. And it is better to book a room not on the eve of the trip – hotels in La Serenissima are crowded during the season.
Of course, you can also stay on the continent, in Mestre, where hotels are even slightly cheaper. But in the morning you will have to trudge to the train station and go one stop to the Venice Santa Lucia train station. Which is inconvenient and leads to the loss of precious time.
Note that from the platform of Santa Lucia station in just 2-3 minutes you will get to the Grand Canal embankment. Where stops literally all the routes of vaporetto, Venetian public transport.
And many city hotels, also well located relative to the main attractions, can be reached from Santa Lucia on foot in 10-15 minutes.
Train Schedule

Because you will spend almost more time (and certainly more effort!) to arrive at the airport, check in for a flight and get there. And then drive to Venice from Marco Polo Airport.

Bus

However, those who consciously choose to trip by car often don’t pay attention to the costs – personal comfort for them is a more expensive thing. Again, in this case, you get complete freedom of movement and can make any routes.
For example, stopping by to see Florence on the way. And then also stuck for a day or two in Bologna, which is not reached by many foreign travelers.

Where to Stay in Venice
About hotels in Mestre, their pros (relatively budget) and cons (remoteness) we mentioned above. In Venice itself, first of all, we recommend paying attention to the areas near the train station.
Since you can rent a room there for a relatively small amount and then easily travel further around the region. For example, to see Juliet’s House and other famous sights of Verona, take a look at Vicenza or quickly to visit Treviso, “Little Venice”.
